How to grow and care for hyacinth

Growing hyacinths is a rewarding way to bring beautiful blooms and delightful fragrance into your home or garden. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

1. Choose the Right Bulbs

  • Purchase high-quality hyacinth bulbs from a reputable garden center.
  • Look for firm, plump bulbs free from mold or damage.

2. Decide on Growing Method

  • In Soil: Ideal for outdoor gardens or pots.
  • In Water (Forcing): Great for indoor displays during winter.

3. Planting in Soil

  • Timing: Plant bulbs in fall, 6-8 weeks before the first frost.
  • Location: Choose a spot with full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil.
  • Depth & Spacing: Plant bulbs 10-15 cm (4-6 inches) deep and 10 cm (4 inches) apart, with the pointed end up.
  • Soil Preparation: Enrich the soil with compost for nutrients.
  • Watering: Water well after planting, but avoid overwatering.

4. Forcing in Water (Indoor Display)

  • Fill a bulb vase or jar with water, ensuring the water level just touches the base of the bulb.
  • Place the bulb in a cool, dark location (5-10°C / 40-50°F) for 8-12 weeks to encourage root growth.
  • Check the water level regularly and replace it to keep it clean.
  • Once the roots develop and the shoot emerges, move the vase to a bright, cool spot indoors.

5. Care During Growth

  • Watering: Keep the soil moist but not soggy.
  • Fertilizing: Use a balanced fertilizer once leaves emerge.
  • Pest/Disease Management: Watch for rot or pests like aphids and slugs.

6. After Blooming

  • Allow the leaves to yellow and wither naturally; this feeds the bulb for next year’s growth.
  • For outdoor bulbs, leave them in the ground or dig them up for storage in a cool, dry place.
