VOLK Furniture was handcrafted in Brooklyn and is characterized by a particular playfulness, in which hard materials are displayed that give way to various attempts at aesthetic softening. Brian Volk-Zimmerman, the company’s founder and designer, has a penchant for unexpected details, such as a beautiful fabric drawer, an intentional shadow that reflects the physical shape of a mirror, or a section of a piece of furniture in which decorative tasks are performed be another. Natural marble, cork and bleached ash give the lively collection shown at the ICFF, which can also be ordered in various noble materials, an elegant sensibility. I love every piece – the design is very eye-catching, and the choice of materials is pretty weird.
