Rethinking Soft Materials Furniture Design Unique Chair Collection

Students in the furniture design and textiles departments at the Rhode Island School of Design were asked to rethink the use of soft materials in furniture design. This furniture collection is the result of their work and thinking outside the box. The Looped Pile Seat was inspired by soft carpets and has a long piece of upholstery foam covered with loops. The Paper Crochet chair with a stainless steel frame that is covered with crocheted paper thread. The sensual lounge chair Million Loops has no frame other than hand-crocheted textiles and is sculptural and flexible at the same time. The Sinuous chair has a simple metal frame contrasted with bold, upholstered profiles. Much like weaving with unfinished edges, the chair is an image of controlled chaos.
