Kevin McCarthy is an American politician who currently serves as the Minority Leader of the United States House of Representatives. Born in Bakersfield, California in 1965, McCarthy began his political career as a staff member for Rep. Bill Thomas before being elected to the California State Assembly in 2002. He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2006, representing California’s 22nd congressional district before later representing the 23rd district. McCarthy quickly rose through the ranks of the Republican Party, eventually becoming the House Majority Leader in 2014. Following the retirement of Speaker of the House Paul Ryan, McCarthy was elected as the Minority Leader in 2019. Known for his conservative views and pro-business policies, McCarthy has been a vocal supporter of former President Donald Trump and his administration’s agenda.
